So I want to get into Yakuza, what's the order I should play the games in?
I'm not super clear what the Kiwami games are - are they like full remakes, remasters, or Twin Snakes style "remake but play the original tho"? (I mean I love twin snakes cheesy ass shit but...) Should I play Zero between certain games or start with it or... Basically I'm a Yakuza newb, ready to play anything. I prefer to play on PC but I have a ps4 available And a ps3. Show me the path of being a true shitlord
First time playing Yakuza and I want to play the rest. What order should I go/begin with?
I got Yakuza kiwami for free from ps4 store and I REALLY enjoyed it. I've never played a Yakuza game before but now I want to try their other titles. Where do I start? I heard Yakuza 0 was good, but I Don't know if I need to play the previous ones before that.
I want to get sucked into the world of Yakuza. Only owning a Ps4, which games do I need to buy and in which order should I play them? Also, what’s the deal with the upcoming game?
My Entirely Positive* One-sentence Game Awards for my Top 50 games completed in 2020
As patient gamers, we know that "Game Award Shows" are a farce; how many gamers can really vote for "game of the year" out of a selection of 20-30 new games? Only people with extreme amounts of money and time (and no dedication to just one game!) Here's my awards for games I actually played to completion, rather than just saying "the one or two new games I bought in year X must therefore have been the best." I decided to be entirely positive* (*mostly) with my awards, as I am known for saying "why are you spending 5-50 hours with something you don't like, you maniac?" Thanks to SomethingAwful for the idea for "One Sentence Game Reviews." Any other awards you would give these games? What are your personal favorite Top 10 games of all time?
I've been thinking of making a list just for myself but figured why not share it with this community and start a discussion. It could be beneficial for others who are looking for recommendations or just for you to get your thoughts out about a game. Below I ranked my personal 10 with a bit of description as to why I like them.
Half Life 2 - This game hasn't left my #1 spot since it came out. It was the first single player FPS game I played. I haven't played Half Life 1 before Half Life 2 so I didn't really know that standing Valve had in the FPS community. But man, the gravity gun changed my life. The physics engine blew my mind. I was so happy that Half Life 2 included puzzles based on physics as well. I think its incredible that a game whose protagonist is a physicist compared to a soldier did so well. I remember when the demo came out I played the Ravenholm level probably 20 times. Then when I was able to buy Half Life 2 I played it another 20 times. I love the setting of Half Life 2, and the oppressive nature of the Combine. The strider fights were a spectacle and meeting DOG was amazing. I personally believe this game is perfect, between gunplay, story, setting, music. I almost cried at the end of Half Life Alyx and am so happy that Valve is continuing the universe. I believe that Half Life 2 still stands the test of time nowadays. It goes on sale often so please try it out! My ranking of the Half Life games are 2 > Alyx > Episode 2 > Episode 1 > Black Mesa > Half Life.
Persona 4 Golden - Atlus shows a masterclass of JRPGs with the Persona series. I haven't played Persona 1 or 2 and my first intro to the series was Golden on the Vita. I remember I played it and finished it in one weekend during college. I didn't even leave my room and stayed up all night getting it done. The characters in Golden from Chie to Kanji are a joy to be around and building relationships with. The soundtrack of the Persona series ties so well with the atmosphere of each game. Persona 4 Golden was also the first JRPG I played and finished. Boy it was a joy. The combat got improved upon greatly in Persona 5 but having the introduction to the series through Golden puts it over the top for me. Soon after beating Persona 4 Golden, I played Persona 3 Portable which was a great game too! Persona 5 deserves all the accolades its getting but I believe that the groundwork for the Western audience was laid by Persona 4 Golden on the Vita.
Judgement - As with many others, my first taste into the Yakuza franchise was when Yakuza 0 came on Steam. Since then I have finished 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2, Judgement, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 in that order. While the other entries in this series are amazing, it was nice to see Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios venture out from the Yakuza storyline and focus on a detective story. The combat was a lot more fluid, almost reminding me of Majima's moveset in Yakuza 0. There was also a slice of life feel to Judgement. I think my favorite thing about the game was the pay off for completing side stories and relationships with people in the city. The last substory was amazing to see. I put this on the list even though I love the other games in the series so here is my ranking for the series. Judgement > Kiwami 2 > Yakuza 6 > Yakuza 0 > Yakuza 4 > Yakuza 7 > Kiwami > Yakuza 5 > Yakuza 3.
Hotline Miami 2 - The Hotline Miami collection introduced me to Retrowave music, and I will forever be grateful for that. Hotline Miami plays as a top down shooter with a very David Lynch like story. The chapters jump from the Past to Future to Present in different ways focusing on different characters. It is all tied up nicely at the end of Hotline Miami 2 in my opinion. This game is as bloody as a pixel game can be. The sense of fear you get when you try to see if anyone heard your gunshot is insane. I put Hotline Miami 2 here instead of 1 because of the larger cast of characters and for the ending. While I did love Hotline Miami 1, 2 for me was just a bit better. This game is eye candy from the floor plans of each level, the retro Miami colors, and the gory way of killing enemies. Hotline Miami 1 started my appreciation for indie games as being powerhouses.
Inside - I once heard someone on the Gameinformer podcast refer to this game as being carved out of one single block of clay. This game runs so smoothly you forget that there is a bunch of code in the background. Playdead is on a roll after Limbo and Inside in the creepy side scrolling puzzle platformer game. Inside had one of the most interesting backdrops I have seen. You are a child breaking into a facility of seemingly unknown reasons. But the game doesn't tell you that, there is no narration or voicework in this game. But its a testament to how carefully crafted this game is that the story can be told by what is happening in the background as you are making your way from left to right. The ending of this game caught me by surprise but I absolutely adored this game from start to finish.
Wolfenstein: The New Colossus - Who doesn't love killing Nazis? Ever since Machinegames took over the franchise of Wolfenstein each entry has just gotten better and better. I've heard different qualms about TNC mainly about the story, but to be honest that was my favorite part of this game. It made BJ into a deeper character rather than a meathead and his Jewish ancestry being a background for fighting Nazi's was poetic. My favorite moment was, in the courtroom dream sequence, right after you get out and meet the memory of your mom. It honestly brought me to tears. The gunplay was as good as it gets as well as the characters on your ship. My one issue was the hacking minigame. I did love the sound effects used but felt overall it was a useless addition. Although I did complete all of it! If I had to rank all the Machinegames Wolfensteins it would go TNC > New Order > Old Blood > Youngblood.
Mass Effect 2 - This game has about 200 hours of play time on my Steam. Bioware were masters of incredible RPG experiences. Mass Effect 2's companions were some of the best party members in an RPG ever. The storylines for each of these characters were a joy to take part in and it was extremely daring for Bioware to say, Hey! Lets put a suicide mission for the ending and have some of your characters permanently die. While the main villain wasn't that good, the overarching villain with culminated into the grand finale of Mass Effect 3 was worth it. I can't say enough as to how fleshed out the crew on the Normandy was. I'm excited to see any quality of life changes in the legendary edition!
What Remains of Edith Finch - I was debating putting this on my top 10 but the more time passed, the more and more I was thinking about the experience playing this game. I didn't play Unfinished Swan so I didn't know much about the developer but I do love Annapurna Interactive's published games. Edith Finch was no different. A first person/adventure/walking simulator game with an engaging story about a very strange family, the game immediately dug its hooks in me and never let go. The house of the Finches felt like a maze but because of how well crafted this game is you never feel lost. The side story about the unfortunate ends of the family is engaging. Not enough can be said about the last family member's story you find and how incredible that experience was.
Pokemon White - I am a huge Pokemon fan having bought one of each of the main series. I am also one of those people who liked SwSh. But I believe that Pokemon was at its best during the Black and White era. Created a new 150 pokemon while not including any past ones was risky, but for me it paid off. It was fun not being shackled by past favorites and looking towards a new generation. While it did seem that they just replaced skins for Pokemon, i.e. Swoobat/Zubat, TimburMachoke, etc. I liked almost all the new designs. The story for this game was also great. N was a great antagonist and actually made me sympathize with what was supposed to be your foe in the game. Why would I fight against someone who views that Pokemon should be free from trainers?
Ori and the Will of the Wisps - I absolutely adored Blind Forest and when Will of the Wisps came out it was just more of Ori but with a bunch of quality of life improvements. The story was even more emotional than the first. Without spoilers I found the villain's story especially after the final fight to be incredibly touching. I love how Moon Studio works as well, being completely decentralized while producing beautiful games.
How does GTA San Andreas have gang wars, car customization, darts, clothing, pool, dating, a storyline, casino's and so much more while this game has little to do besides killing gangs/stealing stuff in your downtime?
We seem to be going backwards in gaming, this game was supposed to be so much more dense. But after 40 hours of playing I have basically done all side missions and kind of feel like not starting it up again, I've practically seen all the content (except repeat missions or collectables). I don't see how you fix this, there's so much content missing. I expected to be put in some kind of futuristic theme park with a heavy focus on doing fun, stupid, interactive stuff and meeting ridiculous individuals but there is just nothing like it. So apart from the graphics: GTA: San Andreas has more content than Cyberpunk. A 16 year old game has more to do. How do you go from the current state of the game and turn it into what was heavily implied during marketing in a short time span? You don't. Here's a big list of stuff that is missing, posted by u/RalphDamiani. But I don't feel like how significantly little open world content is available is made thoroughly enough. These are things I expected to be in the game (all of them advertised or heavily hinted at): - Actual wanted system. Not this alpha testing filler we got. - Immersive NPCs that don't randomly disappear or all synchronise and run away in the same direction. -Cool mini games with NPC's you meet (Like in the Yakuza series, who have had this since 2008) - Some kind of gang system where you either control business' or have to deal with rival gangs - Meaningful back stories that impact the main story - New lines that make your character sound like he actually is a corpo instead of a street kid/nomad at all the time - Car customization - New gear system with obvious transmog options - New cybernetic system - Body sculpt system - Better animations (I stopped using mantis blade because the strong attack animation takes like 10 seconds to execute) - Fix all the small sound bugs, like footsteps not registering or no dialogue at all And then this glorious statement comes out; '' We'll fix the bugs, don't worry ". The bugs are the least of your problems, they suck but I don't care. They'll get fixed. How about the other 70% of the game, you know, actual stuff to do besides the ridiculously short main story which you can finish in 10 hours? Why do they only put out a statement regarding stability when content is another huge factor? I have no idea how complex a game world is to develop but as a creative marketing guy I'm familiar with creative processes and translating design into working features. A lot ideas get cut out because of technical restraints and money issues. Clients always want more than what they're willing to pay for. But how do you make all your money back from pre-orders, and then deliver a product like this? (With a good 5-6 years of development time) You do that when you only care about making money and don't care about the artistic integrity of your studio. The developers/studio guys that worked hard are not to blame, they are the artists. I love what they did, it looks great. Corporate is to blame, they already made back their investment with pre-orders but want more sales with Christmas. How incredibly ironic that a game exploring toxic capitalism is largely ruined by toxic capitalism. What a joke. TLDR: Great tech demo, love it. But come on bro, don't promise me a brand new lambo and deliver a beat up civic.

Hey there kyodai, this is the New and Improved "I'm Tired of Seeing This Posted 300 Times a Day" Yakuza series play order post! We haven't had one of these stickied in a long time, and I doubt this one will be, but at least we will have something to link to! Please feel free to link to it as you see fit! This guide covers the titles on all available current/next gen platforms and PC. Yes I know Yakuza exists on PS2 and PS3, nobody cares anymore. This guide is also just in reference to the NA releases and doesn't go into the PSP titles or the JPN exclusives ISHIN and KENZAN. This is to help the influx of new Xbox and PC players. I will update this post as new releases on PS5 and the like become available! PLEASE NOTE! All physical releases for the PS4 and XB1 will work on new gen PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles. WHERE TO START WITH THE YAKUZA SERIES REGARDLESS of what console you play on, the games are meant to be played chronologically. There is the argument that the story is best played by release date and I will refute that statement until my dying breath. Because it doesn't make sense. Why would you play through the series, then go back to 0, a prequel, then BACK to 6, the end? That's dumb. In the same vein, if you want to experience the entire saga the way it's intended, DON'T SKIP GAMES. Just watching the cutscenes leaves sooo much to be desired. YOU START THE SERIES FROM YAKUZA 0. 0 is available on all platforms and can be had the following ways:
Digitally on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
Digitally as part of the Yakuza Origins bundle on Playstation
Digitally with GAMEPASS on Xbox and PC
Physically as a standalone blue case release on PS4
Physically as a standalone red case Greatest Hits release on PS4
NEXT IS YAKUZA KIWAMI Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of Yakuza on the PS2. It uses a very similar style to Yakuza 0 combat wise and is about half as long. Kiwami is available the following ways:

Digitally with GAMEPASS on Xbox and PC
Physically as a standalone blue case release on PS4
Physically as a standalone red case Greatest Hits release on PS4
Physically as a standalone Steelbook release on PS4
AFTER THAT IS YAKUZA KIWAMI 2 Kiwami 2 is a remake of Yakuza 2 originally released for the PS2. This is the first CHRONOLOGICAL game to use the Dragon Engine. The combat is most similar to Yakuza 6 and JUDGMENT. It's available the following ways:

NEXT IS YAKUZA 3 Yakuza 3 was first released on the PS3 in NA and Japan and acts as a sort of soft reboot for the series in HD. Until just last year it was only ever available on disc but now you've got the following ways to grab it:
Digitally as a standalone title on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
Digitally as part of the Yakuza Remastered Collection on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
Physically as part of the Yakuza Remastered Collection on PlayStation

LOGICALLY, YAKUZA 4 IS NEXT Yakuza 4 marked the first time RELEASE DATE WISE that you could play as someone other than Kiryu. 4 introduced 3 new protagonists to the mix and can be played the follow ways:
Digitally as a standalone title on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
Digitally as part of the Yakuza Remastered Collection on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
Physically as part of the Yakuza Remastered Collection on PlayStation
Physically on PS3
YOU GUESSED IT, YAKUZA 5 COMES AFTER THAT Yakuza 5 brings us 5, count em', FIVE protagonists and is arguably the largest game in the series (although 7 comes damn close). Until recently, 5 was a downloadable only title on the PS Store but can now be purchased as such:

THE SERIES STARTS ANEW WITH YAKUZA: LIKE A DRAGON The newest title in the Yakuza series is Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This game features a totally new protagonist and main area to explore, as well as introduces a brand new, turn based battle system. It's a fantastic game and a welcome change to the formula, despite what Reddit would have you believe. Grab it any of the following ways:
Digitally as a standalone title on PlayStation, Xbox or PC
Physically as a Steelbook release on PlayStation and Xbox
Physically as a standalone blue case release on PS4
And that's it! Feel free to browse but not to carouse!
Hey yall wanted to share my thoughts on all the games I completed this year some of which was back log some of it being 2020 releases but anyway im glad I actually completed a good handful of games this year and hope to finish even more in 2021 anywhere here we go. Borderlands 3 I put about 100ish hours into Borderlands 2 and beat it a few times both on my Xbox 360 and PC, its by far one of my all time favorite open world games and have been looking forward for the sequal for years. I got the game on release but barely played it until around March of 2020 when I finally decided to finish it. Honestly it was a bit of a disappointment in terms of story and characters (one of the greatest aspects of Blands 2. The villains are pretty forgettable along with most of the plot and the humor just didnt hit as much as the first 2 games but besides the gameplay was still great as ever its all smooth and rewarding feeling so at least there is that. Overall it was pretty mediocre and unfortunately not the great Sequel I waited 7 years for. Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. When I was a kid I had this game for the PS2 but never beat it cuz I was like 6? but anyway when I saw Rehydrated was coming out I was pretty hyped as it seemed this was really coming from the heart and from what I remember being 6 and playing they did the game really well! The new graphics looks great but keep that cartoony look and all the characters are talkative and expressive as ever. The gameplay is smooth and I dont think I ever ran into and glitches or bugs. Really the game is just pure fun and totally give it a recommendation to anyone who has ever slightly considered it plus its not crazy long it took me about 10 and a half hours to beat. DOOM Eternal I played DOOM 2016 back when it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it (I was 16 at the time and all I played was League of Legends and Battlefield) it definitely was a fresh breathe in the land of shooters so a sequal I was totally on board for, but this? Holy shit Id Software took DOOM 2016 and said nah that game was shit look at this. Seriously the amount of new stuff added to this game from D-16 is crazy and it just is so much damn fun to play. Im not one to really go out of my way for collectibles but this game really had me searching like an animal for everything. I beat it on Ultra Violence and damn let me say the game is a lot harder than the previous game but it really is up to your skill of switching weapons, dashing, killing, getting health, killing, throwing the wrong type of grenade and waiting for it to recharge. In fact right now its the only game I played from this year im replaying (this time on Nightmare) just to see if I can do it. Easily my game of the year for 2020 and im really sad it got gipped at the game awards especially for its soundtrack where it lost to an acoustic guitar from the last of us. Pokemon Sword Wont dwell on this long, I beat Shield the week it came out last year since Pokemon is my all time favorite game series. Um good game not great compared to the other pokemon games but ya know I liked it and got to add another game to the list of completed games so uh yeah. Halo Reach So I bought the Master Chief collection for PC in January and got around to start going through all the games in the later half of the year. Growing up I only ever played Forge or Firefight with my friends on Halo and never sat down and finished any of the stories except for Halo 2 for some reason? in 2017 I got Halo 5 and beat the story on that and since then got more interested in Halo and honestly have gone neck deep in Halo lore (as we speak im on the 2nd book of the Halo novels) Anyway Reach. Awesome game, a great re-introduction to the series that played perfectly on my PC. I played this and all the Halo games you will read about on Heroic and even if it pissed me off sometimes the accomplishment I felt afterwards was rewarding enough. I think the strongest part of the game is the story telling the fall of Reach from Spartans who arent the Master Chief. Its a sad game honestly and the music and environments reflect that but they also at some points do reflect that small glimmer of hope for Humanity. Ive actually been listening to the Reach soundtrack on occasion and cant get that line out of of my head "there will be another time..." Halo: Combat Evolved Should have stated in the Reach review that im playing the games in Chronological order so next on the chopping block was Halo CE and I can say yes this is definitely Combat Evolved. One thing I tried doing when playing this game was putting myself in the shoes of a gamer in 2001 and I can see why this game was as popular as it was (especially cuz I have played or at least attempted to play shooters from years prior) it just works. The gameplay is so fluid and everything works so well together that its crazy they got AI and Item interaction working like this on an Original Xbox. The story here is good, its nothing crazy...yet but Id say in terms of 2001 games especially shooters I stronger story than most. Guns just feel impactful, the way enemies interreact with the player in their attacks or how they dodge grenades is amazing. Id my only gripe comes with how much Back tracking is used in some levels or how one certain level that was already pretty long and a bit annoying is literally reused 2 missions later just in reverse. But still great game that I think holds up well 20 years later hell id even say certain gameplay aspects like enemy is some how better here than some modern games. Halo 2 What if we took Halo CE and put in new weapons like the legendary Battle Rifle, improved almost every aspect from the first game and made the story x10 better? Boom Halo 2. I beat this as a kid on my OG Xbox back in like 2012 so this was almost still a new experience for me and at least one I can appreciate now. Not much to say about the gameplay here since its stayed about the game but the introduction of the new selection of weapons and the option to duel wield is great. Really I just want to talk about the story (minor spoilers) But like the fact we got to play as the Arbiter with the covenant is awesome and seeing the development of a branded heretic Elite learn the truth of everything and the betrayals and the drama happening within the Covenant is amazing. I love the characters even if they arent crazily fleshed out but that might be from just good chemistry and performances like Johnson and Miranda and my girl Cortana of course. Really I could write a small essay on Halo 2's story but I wont, not now at least. Some minor gripes with the game for me the levels are great and while not repeated I say some are less memorable than the ones presented in Halo CE not to mention in later Levels when fighting the brutes the arsenal of weapons almost shrinks and maybe it was just me but it feels like you are ill-equipped in a couple later game levels where you only have plasma/covenant weapons to fight brutes where it seems to me at least Human weapons work better against them which kind of made the game harder and definitely helped up that this games had my most deaths this games Heroic hit different from the previous games. Its hard though, I dont know which game I liked better CE or 2 maybe in time I can give a definite answer but really they are both Bangers. (Also the updated Cinematic graphics are beautiful) Halo 3 Grinded this games story out pretty over the last week of Decembeearly January. The final game in the Trilogy, and Bungie just hitting us with Banger after Banger really just not much I can say here I havent already said in the previous it just kept building upon what the last game introduced with more weapons and equipment (Bubble shield hang) again a super memorable story I say somewhere between CE and 2 in terms of quality. I loved the dynamic between Chief and The Arbiter. For a game released in 2007 for the Xbox 360 id argue for the most parts the game holds up really well and makes for some of the most memorable levels in all of Halo like that damn Warthog run, and the difficulty here felt super balanced for the most part (We dont talk about the Cortana mission tho) I can see why Halo was such a big deal when they came out and I know it was also for the Multiplayer but I guess that just adds to how well made these games were and how they hold up all these years later. Going into 2021 I have Halo 3 ODST and Halo 4 left to play and finish and am very excited for both. Like I also mentioned ive been reading the books as well and am on the 2nd book with the next 2 ordered and waiting for me to read. Conclusion 8 games may not seem like a lot to some but for me it is especially since I tend to play lots of multiplayer games or games that are basically endless (hence games like No Mans Sky) I think for the most part I came away this year having played a lot of great games and cant wait to beat more in 2021 currently here is the list of games I have in my Library and will attempt to beat.
It is not recommended to skip any of the games since a lot of the plot relies on knowledge from previous games. This might cause you to feel lost at times and even if you don't, knowing the events of the previous game gives you a better experience. That being said, the story of most of the games are still somewhat self-contained so even if some of the previous games will be spoiled and you might not understand some things, you will still enjoy any of the games that you play. It is up to you.
Where can I play the games?
All of the mainline games are available on PS4/5, Xbox and PC. (starting from march 25th)
What are the differences between the original games, the kiwamis, and the remastered games?
Yakuza kiwami and kiwami 2 are remakes of the original yakuza 1 and 2 that feature updated graphics, gameplay and new content. Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 remastered are upscaled versions on the original games. The English version of the games was completely retranslated and some cut content from the original release where restored.
Which yakuza games have a dub?
Judgment and Yakuza: like a dragon have english dubbed voices as well as subtitles in French, German, Italian and Spanish. It is also highly likely that any future localisations will also have one. The original Yakuza 1 also has a dub but it's ummm... not the greatest thing.
What is Yakuza Like a Dragon? Is it a spinoff?
Yakuza LaD is the 8th mainline game and it is known as Ryu ga Gotoku 7 (Yakuza 7) in Japan. It's a soft-reboot of the series that focuses on a new protagonist and cast of charecters and unlike the previous games, this one is a turn-based JRPG.
Can I play Yakuza 7 without playing any of the other games?
Yes. Since it focuses on a new cast of charecters and story, you will understand it even if you haven't played any of the other games. However, it will contain story spoilers for a lot of the previous games, especially 5 and 6, so be warned if you're planning on playing those games in the future.
What are Ishin, black panther, Judgment, etc? Are they yakuza games? Are they canon?
Ryu ga gotoku kenzan and Ryu ga gotoku Ishin are Samurai spinoffs that take place during the Edo period. Kurohyo: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinsho (or Yakuza: black panther) and its sequel are spinoffs developed by Syn Sophia for the PSP. The story takes place in kamurocho but it's not related to the main games. Yakuza Dead Souls is a non-canon zombie spinoff that takes place after yakuza 4. It is the only localised game that is stuck on the ps3 :( Binary Domain is a third-person shooter that was made the same creators as yakuza. However, it's not a yakuza game. (Funnily enough though, this is the very first game that was developed under the name RGGStudio) Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (or Hokuto ga gotoku) is a spinoff that's based on the FotNS manga. There's actually some debate about weather this is a yakuza game or not but we consider it one. Ryu ga Gotoku Online is a free-to-play Gacha RPG. The main story follows Ichiban as the protagonist. The game is not canon but it does have canon backstories for a lot of the series's characters. Judgment is a spinoff that follows the story of Takayuki Yagami, a Kamurocho detective. The story revolves around some Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance members but it's not directly related to the main series.
A live action movie directed by Takashi Miike called Like a Dragon
A 40-minute prequel to said movie
A stage play
A live action TV adaptation of Kurohyou
A 3-volume Manga adaptation of Kurohyou
A TV show that released with yakuza 6 called RGG: Tamashi no Uta
and a series of comics that retell the story of all of the mainline games
Why are some of the songs in the Japanese version different?
Due to licensing issues, a lot of the songs were removed from the English version of the games and were replaced by something else. Fortunately, recent releases like kiwami 2 and judgment have stopped doing this. You can see a list of these songs here If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them here!
INTRODUCTION (can be skipped) So a over a week ago i started thinking about how many Japanese expressions i was learning from wasting months spending so much time here watching streams despite not having learnt formally a bit of Japanese. I ended up gathering all the terms, inside jokes i read and heard a lot in the streams to make idk some starter pack meme or test to post lol. But then i thought that maybe it would be more useful to make it a more in deep dictionary. We have many new people coming from the EN side or translated clips and some of them are understandably thrown off or scared on watching something which is 99% in a language you don't know. This isn't the first time someone has tried to do this, there was a very complete post 3 months ago (https://www.reddit.com/Hololive/comments/icgxaq/a_guide_to_basic_written_hololive_japanese/) but from that time till now we have 3x more subscribers and this was more focused on written posts. Mine is different. The focus of this one is mostly two things: That you learn enough things to get a tiny tiny grasp on what's going on streams if there isn't enough translation and than you can get and join in in most inside jokes even if you aren't into the weaboo culture stuff. HOW TO USE Trying to study this is a pointless endeavour. Just look it over with CTRL+F (too lazy to order it alphabetically now) when you hear some term you want an explanation on or some inside term that you don't get fully. The first word is how the word is in romanji (latin alphabet) and then how is written in Japanese (normally hiragana) in case you want to use it. The dictionary divided into 3 sections for ease of use. This isn't a complete rundown of all the Hololive lingo because it would be waay too long and or a Japanese language course because it goes over my knowledge and as a language is way too nuanced and contextual to teach in one post. But i'm open for submissions and corrections from japanese speakers, i only did the work to research every term from others! If you need a more complex translation althrough it's far from perfect, it's always recommended that you use DeepL (https://www.deepl.com/en/translator) DICTIONARY: Basic Japanese expressions:
Ohayo (おはよう): “Good morning”. Casual form of “Ohayo gozaimasu” (おはようございます)
Konnichiwa (こんにちは): “Good afternoon”
Konbanwa (こんばんは): “Good evening”
Oyasumi (おやすみ): “Good night”. Casual form of Oyasuminasai (おやすみなさい)
Hontouni? (本当に): “Really?”. Also it's used in the same way as "really x" in English to emphasize something.
Arigatou (ありがとう): “Thank you”. Casual form of Arigatou gozaimasu (ありがとうございます)
Omedetou! (おめでとう): Congratulations! Casual form of Omedetou gozaimasu (おめでとうございます)
Otsukaresama (お疲れ様): A good translation would be "Thank you for your hard work", more like a common generic expression to say goodbye to co-workers and friends after a work day or meeting. Check out the entry on "otsu-" in the Hololive section to see how they transform the word as a goodbye in their streams.
Tadaima (ただいま): A popular expression you tell someone when you come back home. Here they use it when after they had to leave the stream.
Okaeri (おかえり): What you reply when someone says "Tadaima".
Gommenasai (ごめんなさい): "I'm sorry". The short casual form "Gomen" (ごめん) is really common.
Sumimasen (すみません): Another polite way of saying "I'm sorry" but can be more versatile like the English "Excuse me"
Kudasai (下さい), Onegaishimasu (お願いします) : The two main ways to say "please" in Japanese. You will find them mostly at the end of a phrase to 'soften' the blow. Ex: "Yamete Kudasai" = "Please stop". Onegaishimasu is considered a bit more formal and polite but both are used often.
Yamete (やめて): One form of pleading someone to stop something, usually as part of やめてください (yamete kudasai) which is a bit more polite. Also you hear sometimes Yamero (やめろ) which is the more imperative serious form. As with many expressions in Japanese the more commanding and absolute expressions are used more often between men while the softer more polite forms are used more often between women. [That's one of the reasons japanese natives can usually detect if you have been taught mostly by a male/female teacher] In my experience watching streams they do use Yamero often though.
Yabai (やばい): Literally means "risky/dangerous" but it used in the meaning of "dangerously too much of something". It can be used both with positive or negative connotations, like something that is overwhelmingly well-done, a situation in a horror game that is so scary that makes you panic or a youtube thumbnail that is way too spicy to be allowed without banning the stream. It's a common casual term between young Japanese people, not something to be used in a formal context. As with other words ending in -ai the pronuntiation got slurred to -e resulting in “Yabe”. More recently some in chat are writing it like “Yab”.
Naruhodo (なるほど): "I see!", "I get it now!"
Wakatta (わかった): "I understood!" Sometimes they don't wakatta at all, though.
kuso (くそ): It means "shit" and it used in this context exactly the same way you would use it English, like "damn" or "fuck".
Ureshii (嬉しい): “I’m glad”/”That makes me happy”
Bikkurishita (びっくりした): “That surprised/scared me”
Mou ikkai (もう一回): “One more!”, as in “one more try”/”one last game” …
Oishii (美味しい) : “Delicious/Tasty”. Men may use more often Umai (うまい) which is considered more crude and slangy as a term. Umai can also mean “good [at doing something]/skilled at”
Ojisan (おじさん): Literally “Uncle” but frequently used as “middle-age man/mister”. In Hololive (at least) it’s implied this person is some kind of creepy pervert with younger girls when used as adjective for one of their members. Ex: “Watame Oji-san” = “Wata-oji”
Totemo (とても ) : “Very”. Really used generic word but native speakers may prefer more nuanced words depending on the context in the same way you don’t use “very” all the time.
Meccha (めっちゃ): An informal adverb used to do a superlative version of “very” like “supeextremely”. It comes from youth slang in the Kansai region that got popular with the general youth (probably thanks to TV comedians). Other popular words for this adverb are “chou” (チョー) and “sugoku” (すごく)
Mecha kucha (めっちゃくっちゃ): Something that is really: a mess, absurd, all over the place... It could be the origin of Meccha (めっちゃ)
Ikuzo! (行くぞ): “Let’s go!”/”Let’s do it!”
Saikou (最高): “The highest/maximum”
Minna (みんな): “Everyone”, as in everyone in the chat. Minna is the casual form of the word that get used among groups of friends. The polite version when you need a more formal address to an audience is Mina-san (皆さん)
Daijobu (大丈夫 ) : “It’s ok/fine”. You can hear them asking this in question form (something like “Is everything okay?/Are you okay?”) to the chat whenever something (audio, video, connection, missing something important in a game) seems wrong or the chat starts being too agitated.
Nani? (なに): "What?" Also the appropiate way to reply when you get to know you're already dead.
Doko? (どこ?) : “Where?”
Sasuga (さすが ): “As expected of...” In the overseas chat it’s used both as praise of someone’s abilities (as in “You’re great as playing this game (as we all knew already!)” so you’re impressed even knowing their previous reputation) or to mock ironically flaws in character (affectionally). In native Japanese I’m not so sure if this second meaning it’s used as much but Sasuga itself is pretty more nuanced as an expression.
Kawaii (かわいい): “Cute”
Kowai (こわい): “Scary”
Kakkoii (かっこいい): “Cool”
Itai (痛い) : Literally "Painful, hurt" but used as an onomatopoeia of "Ouch!"
Uta (歌): “Song”. A stream dedicated to singing is called "utawaku" (歌枠)
Ganbatte! (がんばって): “You can do it!”, a way to root/cheer for the success of someone
Chotto matte (ちょっと待って): "Wait a minute/ a moment". Chotto is an small amount(ちょっと) and Matte (まって) is "to wait"
Urusai (うるさい): Literally "[Too] Noisy/Loud", in practice it means "Shut up!"
Senpai ( 先輩): Your senior. In Japanese and other Asian cultures this is really important because respecting, serving and being loyal to your seniors (both elders and work/school seniors) is still a fundamental part of the social etiquette. Nowadays though it has been losing some relevance over a westernized meritocratic system so it has opened itself to a more superficial relationship in some places. You will see Kiryu Coco talk about “Paisen” (ぱいせん) which how you call your senpais when you’re really close together.
Kouhai (後輩): Your Junior. In Asiatic cultures the Senpais also have some duties over treating their kouhai according to the social etiquette which includes things like taking care of them as emotional support of to take them under their wings to show them all the ropes of the job.
Sensei (先生): "Teacheprofessor"
Tensai (天才): "Genius". Or at least they claim to be for comical effect.
Sugoi (すごい): Almost always you’ll hear it, it means “Awesome!” or “Impressive!” but hilariously enough it can mean the exact opposite too: “Horrible, Awful”. This is because it’s nuanced in the same way that “Awesome” is: something so overwhelmingly impressive that causes awe, good or bad.
Tanoshii(楽しい): “Fun”, “Pleasant”
Chigau (違う) : “Wrong”, “different”
Tadashi (正しい): “Correct”, “right”
Kimoi (キモイ): Slang for "Gross/creepy/disgusting", literally "bad feeling".
Kimochi (きもち): "feeling". Its most known variation, for reasons, is kimochii which means "good feeling" which includes the particle -ii to mean "good".
Baka (ばか): "Stupid/Fool/Idiot". The king of the swearwords. Shiranui Flare, Tsunomaki Watame and Shirakami Fubuki are self-named as the "Bakatare [stupid, idiotic] trio" due to their antics while playing games in collabs
Daisuki (大好き): "I like you a lot" with suki (好き) meaning "i like you"
Aishiteru (愛している) : "I love you" but in real life it's like a really really strong "i love you". Stories tell that even some married couples doubt on using this, so it's more rare to use in Japan than in overseas. Shouldn't have to remind everyone, but for both this and "daisuki" don't take them too seriously when they use them in streams, they like to play with them hyperbolically or to make a comedy bit.
Muzukashii (むずかしい): "Difficult/Hard". For example Haachama wrote once "English muzukashi OMG"
Hazukashii (はずかしい): "Embarrased/shy"
Mite! (見て!): "Look!"
Yokatta (よかった): Can be used as the past form of being good (so "It was good") but you're going to hear it with the meaning of "I'm glad to hear that", "What a relief [to know that now]"
Are? (あれ?): "Huh?"
Yatta! (ヤッタ!): "I did it, yay!"
Yoroshiku (よろしく): You hear it mostly is the form of Yoroshiku onegaishimasu (よろしくおねがいします) A natural translation would be like "Please treat me well/be kind to me" and it's a custom you say whenever you introduce yourself to other people to express your hope to start with a good relationship. In formal business japanese this phrase is used really really often not only in introductions but after asking for favors.
Japanese Internet and popular culture expressions:
Gachi Koi (ガチ恋): An expression from idol culture. Literally means "serious love" but a better translation would probably be "super obsessive fan" as you can guess from the first translation. With time the expression has soften and is used many times in a exaggerated/joking context. I think it's used more often by male fans.
Gap Moe: Moe is used very often in anime/otaky culture and is some specifics aspects of a character that makes them cute and really, deeply attractive to you (Althrough the word has to a surprinsingly complex meaning with some nuances and has expanded to general hobbies). Gap here means the difference between different aspects of the personality of someone. So putting both together, it means the stark contrast of different personalities of someone that makes them really attractive to you. For example, the anime "yandere" archetype of a sweet girl that is a psychopath when she get jealous, or a clumsy character that is a pro at some game.
Seiso (清楚): Literally means "pure, wholesome, uncorrupted (of knowing sexual and other adult stuff)" and it refers to some archetype of idols that used to be the ideal expected from of them. Nowadays many fans still take this seriously but it's more often a running joke. For example in Hololive is common for a streamer to say something perverted and when the chat points it out them saying they aren't perverts but seiso idols. If you ask me, modern "seiso" idols are a bit more more about attitude (agency) than purity, a way they chose to act after they look at the abyss (of degenerancy) rather than being some virginal person. In that meaning you can actually be both seiso and degenerate at different times.
wwwwwwwww : In Japanese "warai" means "to laugh".. Writing a w is faster than that, specially in a western keyboard and that's how it came to be in online culture. So it's their way to say "hahahaha". You can see it as a final "w" at the end of many messages if you were confused before. I guess there it means more like "lol".
Kusa, Big 草 : 草 (kusa) is a kanji for grass. As the story goes (that has been explained sooo many times in this subreddit lol) for japanese users the "wwwww" look like blades of grass, hence 草 ended up as a short hand for that so it means something like lol/lmao. It's something you always see in Hololive JP streams' chats. Big 草 is a beautiful example of cross-cultural interactions, like japanglish.
KSZK (くそざこ): Acronym of “kuso zako”. Literally “shitty noob”. Someone who does something pathetically really amateur (unprofessional). For example, oversleeping a scheduled stream or having their stream disconnected due to shitty internet connection. Coco has a recurring segment of this in Asacoco but please don’t take it too seriously, it’s mostly a way to poke fun at her work pals. The majority of the audience are more amused by these problems than angry.
Kaigai niki (海外ニキ): Comes from “Kaigai aniki”, literally “overseas [elder] brothers” = "overseas bros". It means the worldwide community of fans outside of Japan. The japanese fanbase is the "nihon-niki". For the female fanbase the word is "neki" and for the specific fanbase of both men and women they use both like "nekiniki/nikineki"
RTA: Literally means “Real Time Attack” and is what the Japanese use to talk about speedruns.
Haishin (配信): “Stream/Broadcast”. Also used, “Housou” (放送)
888888: Used as sort of onomatopoeia of clapping. Also, it’s a pun between “Pachi”, which means clapping and “Hachi”, which means 8.
Batsu game (罰ゲーム): A punishment you do for losing to someone or failing to do something. If you have watched Japanese variety TV before you will know this is almost its own genre of entertainment. For Vtubers, it’s mostly just playing horror games or eating spicy food.
Taikyuu (耐久): “Endurance”. In this context it’s used to talk about “endurance streams” which are stream that won’t end until some (hard) goal/milestone gets completed like beating a game in one go or winning an online match of some battle royale game.
Zatsudan (雑談): "Free chat/Idle chat". What you know as "Just chatting" if you come from Twitch culture. Exactly what it says in the tin, the streamer talks about things that has happened to them or plan to happen and interact for a bit with the chat. A stream with zatsudan is a zatsudanwaku (雑談枠).
Doki Doki (ドキドキ): Onomatopoeia of a beating heart. So you can guess it get used to emphasize nerve-wracking situations or romantic interactions in a goofy way.
Guru guru (ぐるぐる): A sound of something that goes around in circles. They use this to talk about the emoji for loading/buffering in a stream.
Hololive-related expressions and inside jokes:
Mama, papa: That's "mom" and "dad" in Spanish, in case you didn't know. They aren't talking about their biological fathers but instead the ones who designed their character Live2D avatar and the person who rigged the animations. Vtubers have a really grateful, supportive relation with the artists that made them come to life. Other words are used for this like mamma/mammy/mamman or the japanese equivalents hahaue (母上) / chichiue (父上).
FAQ: A way to pronounce "fuck you" (the q sounds similar). When you are so elite as Sakura Miko, you discover it's a really flexible word to react, greet each other, confess your love, apologize...
10Q: "Thank you."
Yubi Yubi: One catchphrase of many of our doggo Inugami Korone. Korone has a fascination with the criminal underworld customs and vocabulary (In fact, she used to have a section in Asacoco about this very thing). Yubi means finger and in yakuza (Japanese mafia) culture it is the one thing you get chopped off when you commit a grave mistake. In Korone's first stream this started as a joke she found funny. The gag evolved into her being an insecure doggo making a collection that wants to take your fingers as a safe deposit to ensure you stay watching all the stream (which can be really long) before her giving your fingers back. The fate of your fingers is decided in the sketch at the end of most streams which is some sort of improvised and hilarious bizarre short story to see if you get them back. Spoiler: You usually get them back but not in the best state. And then you explode and die for some reason.
Nyahello: The standard greeting of elite shrine maiden Sakura Miko. Also written sometimes as "nyahallo". A reference to the greeting "Yahallo!" from Oregairu (Abbreviation of the name of light novel/manga/anime "Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru", known in English as "My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected") character Yui Yuigahama. This is because Tanaka Yuuichi was both the character designer of Oregairu and Miko herself originally (but not currently).
Peko Peko Peko: A catchphrase of mischievous rabbit Usada Pekora. In anime some characters have some finish particles to their phrases like "-desu" or "-aru" that never happens in real life but for Japanese natives it makes them sound cuter. For Pekora the particle is "-peko". In her lore (please don't take it seriously) this is because she comes from the country of Pekoland. There they speak Pekolandish in which somehow every word is "peko". Pekora uses this expression often to laugh before doing some mischievous plan or to mock them after they lose to her. Sometimes wrote with arrows [PE↗️ KO↘️ PE↗️ KO↘️ PE↗️ KO↘️ PE ↗️ KO↘️] to represent the very characteristic changes of pitch she does while saying it. Once you hear it you will never forget it.
Asacoco: Really early morning show (in JST) hosted by dragon Kiryu Coco in her channel 3 days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). In the show Coco talks about Hololive related news from announcements or milestones to funny moments of the previous days. Asacoco is also the name of some undescribed ficticious drug Coco sells in many forms in ads during the show. It's implicit the very same show somehow is the drug too so when you don't watch it, you feel withdrawal symptoms if you don’t get more doses.
Tee Tee (ていてい/てぇてぇ): It's used to describe pure, cute, heartwarming, affectionate moments between 2 or more vtubers. It’s an internet variation of toutoi (尊い) which means “precious”.
Otsu- (korone, nomaki…): In Japanese a common way to say goodbye/hello in the job or other contexts is お疲れ様 (otsukaresama, a crude translation is "Thanks for your hard work, you must be tired") In Hololive [and other vtubers] many make it cutesy by changing -karesama for their name or some expression to say goodbye to the audience and for the audience to say goodbye to them. There's too many to put here but for example Inugami Korone says "Otsukorone", Tsunomaki Watame says "Otsunomaki", Pekora says "Ostupeko", Tokoyami Towa says "Otsuyappi"... Some other do use completely different expressions, check out Hololive fan wikis for that.
Gaming onion: The head of Minato Aqua's first Live2D model looks like a purple onion. Aqua is also a really good hard-working gamer. Both together are a affectionate way to poke fun at her. Recently, she complained after watching a clip of Hololive EN Amelia Watson mentioning her as a "certain vegetable senpai"; which could lead in the future to the nickname "yasai senpai" as yasai means vegetable in japanese and it has some rhythm to it.
Crazy comedian rabbit: A way for overseas fans to refer jokingly to Usada Pekora because of her comedy hijinks and blessed comedic timing. Also how they reply when Pekora says she's an idol. Hey, she can still be your favorite crazy comedian rabbit idol!
Akipella: A portmanteau of Aki + a capella due to the habit of accidentally muting the BGM of Aki Rosenthal during her singing streams. Her fans are pretty creative about adding Aki- to some other words.
HAACHAMA CHAMA~!: Catchy greeting of Haachama (aka Akai Haato). Haachama used to be like some alter personality of Haato which is crazier and almost supernatural but recently Akai Haato is dead because Haachama killed her (at least that’s what she says). In her videos she uses this greeting very very often, sometimes in the middle of songs she sings in some sort of deranged brainwashing chant way to get her viewers insane and to subscribe to her. In my personal experience, it works.
Kitsuneko (キツネコ). In Japanese "kitsune" is "fox" and neko is "cat". This portmanteau means "foxcat". Our friend and wholesome meme queen Shirakami Fubuki is based on an original mythological arctic fox. Her name in fact can be read as "White god Blizzard" (foxes are a common trope in JP mythology). The thing is that the audience doesn't always agree, they think she's cat. She plays into it by saying so many times that "she isn't a cat but a fox" or doing random cat noises. So her public thinks now maybe she has been a kitsuneko all along.
TMT: Acronym for “Towa Maji Tenshi” which means “Towa is really an Angel”. Tokoyami Towa tries really hard to show she’s a true evil demon but her continuous acts of kindness and inability to do evil things make her fans think otherwise. This acronym usually gets spammed whenever Towa appears or get mentioned on a stream.
PPTenshi: Hololive resident angel Amane Kanata did her debut livestream using Powerpoint (PPT). “Tenshi” means “angel”. Over time the meaning became a backcronym because there are many words that could fit like “Perfect Pitch”,”Poor Precious”, “Pure Power”…
Watamelon: Fluffy sheep Tsunomaki Watame + watermelon = Watamelon. She was made aware of this pun and she started wearing a watermelon helmet for a few streams and even released a (silly) mini song about having a “watamelon head”. Other related puns: “Watamelody”, “sheep-posting”, ”membersheep”.
Haato Basic: Overseas nickname for Akai Haato (Haachama) due to her cooking streams and videos being comparably as cursed as comedy youtuber HowToBasic.
Piki Piki Piiman: Cutey expression for someone who is being pissed off/salty/frustrated at some task, like at a videogame. Piiman means “green pepper”. That’s why Korone has a pepper in her coffee during her streams.
スーパーチャットタイム : In romanji it's "suppa chatto time". The other show Kiryu Coco does is a weekly meme review of this very subreddit with Hololive guests, which is a fun way of bridging the language gap between both communities and to make the Hololivers bond a bit more with their overseas fanbases since Japan has a totally different meme culture and you never know how they would react (althrough you end up discovering meme humor is universal). Anyways, in the show Coco translates the memes to Japanese and doesn't like when someone adds a shitty google-translate Japanese translation or random japanglish but the guests usually love this kind of awkward dorky japanese. One of the shitty japanese that stuck was this one and is used as some sort of call by viewers to send waves of donations.
量子チキンスープグラ ス ビッグチュングス: It doesn't mean anything. Really. It's an intentionally meaningless expression only made with the purpose of pissing off Coco after she scold the overseas community over shitty Japanese translations.
Shuba Shuba Shuba: Quirky catchphrase of Oozora Subaru when she’s excited, it somehow sounds like a duck. Subaru originally doesn’t have anything to do with ducks but the meme caught up when she did an unintentional Donald Duck imitation in an ASMR stream (really) and from there she likes to use duck drawings in her streams. She has acknowledged that she took inspiration of “Peko Peko Peko” when looking for a catchphrase.
Ahoy~! : Greeting of pirate captain [cosplayer] Houshou Marine and by extension chat spam whenever something related to pirates appear in a stream.
Kensetsu (建設): “Construction” as in “Construction company”. This is a normal word but I didn’t know where to put it lol. In Hololive’s Minecraft server they love their big building/art/automation projects, with their main builders having their own made-up construction company and “employees” sometimes helping out. The ones building the most for now are Aqua, Pekora, Haachama and Subaru.
AKUKIN: Alter ego of Minato Aqua which is an affectionate parody of really popular Japanese Youtuber HikakinTV and comes with the meme sunglasses. Currently the CEO of AKUKIN Kensetsu.
[]-chou (-長) [Kaichou, Senchou, Danchou....]: The relevant meaning of the root kanji chou 長 for this definition is "chief/head/leader" and is used to mark many profession are the boss of others. In Hololive, this trend caught like wildfire and now many members use this as some sort of nickname.
---- For example: Houshou Marine is the Senchou (船長) or "Ship Captain", Shirogane Noel is the Danchou (団長) or ----"[Military] Party Leader", Kiryu Coco is the Kaichou (会長) or "Chairman of a Company/association [in this instance ----it's implied the association is a criminal one]", Takanashi Kiara is the Tenchou (店長) or "Store Manager" [of her ----made-up business KFP], some others claim to be the Sachou (社長) or "CEO/President of a company"...

I am also open to looking at your list, as there's tons of stuff that interest me asides from what I have listed. However, I am not interested in digital items as I prefer to collect/own games physically if possible.
So, I've been loving reading all the posts about the games you all have played this year and I was inspired to also share my games. I will not go too much into the games but mostly share a few short thoughts on them. Also, I will list them in chronological order, i.e. the order in which I played them through. There will also be one or two recent games that I played at release.
January Lego City Undercover (Wii U): My first Lego game and I had a lot of fun with it. Others have described it as GTA for children and this might be rather accurate. It has a fun open-world, a lot of collectibles if you like those, the characters are great, and the whole game just makes fun of many movie tropes and many of the lines made me actually laugh. It is a great game for children but also adults as many lines are clearly direct toward adults, especially all the movie parodies may not be picked up by younger gamers. All in all, I loved this game and I am looking forward to other Lego games (open for any recommendations). Score: 8/10 Pokemon Silver (Game Boy/Color): It wasn't really the first playthrough but I wanted to play one of the old Pokemon games that I have played in my childhood since I had stopped after the third generation and the only newer games that I have played were the Sun/Moon games. It aged pretty well even with some of the outdated mechanics. Had a lot of fun and I was blown away by the endgame content since I never discovered that as a child. Score: 9/10
February Concrete Genie (PS4): Unexpectedly fun game. You play as this boy with a magic brush with which you interact with the world and which is also the main mechanic of the game to defeat enemies and solve small puzzles. Loved the art style of the game, loved the adorable creatures you could create, and it had a nice message. Score: 8/10
March Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles (PS4): A wonderful little game. I loved the look of the game. It was beautiful and gave off a really cozy vibe. There are no real (if any) enemies. You rather collect things, carry out tasks given by the villagers while still having an overarching story, albeit a rather negligible one. It got a little repetitive toward the end but that was probably because of my effort to achieve the platinum trophy. The mechanics were also not all fully-fledged out but it is all in all a very charming game. Score: 7/10 Picross 3D: Round 2 (3DS): What can I say? Plain old Picross with a ton of content (my playtime was roughly 83 hours). I loved playing this at night in bed right before sleeping. If you like Picross games I can highly recommend this one. Score: 10/10
May Days Gone (PS4): Fun open-world zombie game. Has a charismatic and likable protagonist and I had a lot of fun exploring the world. For some, the beginning might be rather slow but I was hooked from the beginning. The story can be generic at times but I still enjoyed it a lot. And one of the best aspects was the hordes. Oh boy, are they scary when you first encounter them but working toward defeating them is incredibly satisfying. Also, loved the soundtrack. There were moments when a track set in and you had to ride your bike from one point to another and you were just vibing with the music. I am looking forward to the second game. Score: 8/10 A Way Out (PS4): Played it with a friend, loved it more than I expected I would. It is a unique take at a co-op game with a split screen. I really liked how one character was doing something entirely different while the other one is throwing chickens into the air. In all seriousness, the game and the story would be nothing special if it weren't for the co-op aspect but that makes this game just so good. One moment you have action filled sequence and in the next you're playing piano with your buddy. There were many great little moments in this game and it even switched up the gameplay at some points. It surprised us in many ways in the six hours we played the game. Score: 8/10
June Yakuza Kiwami (PS4): My first Yakuza game and I loved every minute of it. It does not have a big map but that little district is filled to the brim with wacky characters and side quests, a lot of fun mini-games and activities, while the main story is rather serious and suspenseful. Love Kiryu, the protagonist, and the fighting mechanic. The finishers are just brutal, but so much fun. But I will never grasp the mechanics of mahjong. Score: 9/10 Firewatch (PS4): A short "walking simulator". Beautiful art style and setting. Gave off a rather cozy vibe and the little mysteries were interesting enough but it didn't really click with me. Score: 5/10 Gris (PS4): Beautiful art style, beautiful level design, and it really touched me on an emotional level without a single dialog. Also, the music is just incredible, it added so much in specific moments. It is a short game, so you could easily play it in one afternoon. Score: 10/10 The Last of Us: Part II (PS4): One of the games that I wasn't patient with and played on release. It had a big controversy as most of you surely know, but I loved this game to bits. Beautiful graphics, improved gameplay mechanics, interesting and lovable characters and so many incredible details. You could see the love that was poured into the game. There were some aspects I did not enjoy and which I cannot mention without spoiling the game but they were negligible. In fact, my score may even change to a perfect ten when I play this game a second time with a fresh perspective. Whatever the case may be, I commend Naughty Dog for their daring direction they took with this game even if it did not resonate with everyone. Score: 9/10
July Death Stranding (PS4): (Might contain a slight spoiler!)Another controversial game that I thoroughly enjoyed. I do not know why it hooked me so much to play as a delivery guy but it did. It has an interesting albeit often confusing story. I liked the characters and fell in love with the BB. And the soundtrack was just incredible, one of my favorite tracks was "BB's Theme". I think I have never cried so much while slowly walking through an empty world. It is a weird game but I loved it nonetheless. Score: 8/10
August The Walking Dead Definitive Series (PS4): I wanted to finally play the complete Telltale Walking Dead Series. I played the first two seasons back when they were released on the PS3 and loved both seasons, especially the first one. Loved all four seasons, even though the third one is the weakest. But the fourth one was a fitting and beautiful farewell from the developers after the demise of Telltale. It was really bittersweet to see the credits. Also, cried like a baby. Would play again. Score: 9/10 Flipping Death (PS4): Fun, little puzzler. You play as Penny who meets an untimely demise and is mistaken as the replacement for death while he goes on vacation. It is a wacky story with charming characters and interesting gameplay mechanics. Had a lot of fun with it. Score: 8/10 Batman Arkham Asylum (PS3): My first Batman game and it was incredible fun. I realize now where many games with similar mechanics have been inspired by. The fighting is fun albeit sometimes clunky. I liked the setting of the asylum (I always assumed it was just in the asylum, did not expect a whole ass island) and I am already looking forward to the other games. Score: 8/10
September Grand Theft Auto 4: Complete Edition (PS3): Finally got around playing this through. I played it several times in the past decade but always only a few hours. It has now become one of my favorite entries in this series. The graphics on the PS3 are really bad since it was not properly optimized. It is kind of blurry but I got used to it. The story was really entertaining and was one of the best in the series. I liked Niko, I liked the setting of Liberty City and I even got used to the abhorrent driving mechanics. The DLCs were also fun although I enjoyed the Ballad of Gay Tony more than The Lost and Damned. Score: 8/10 A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS4): Great game by a smaller studio. The setting of the Inquisition and the Plague was fresh and unused and I liked the brother-sister dynamic. There are no games that I know of where you play as the older sister with a younger brother and this kind of resonated with me as an older sister. The story got a little weird toward the end and I think the developers had to cut some content but it did not affect my enjoyment too negatively. Score: 8/10
October Okami (PS4): Oh boy, have I fallen in love with this game. For some reason, I had always put off playing this game and I finally did and did I enjoy every single minute of it. The art style is just chef's kiss, that watercolor kind of graphics is just beautiful. I loved Amaterasu, I loved Issun and I loved all the other characters in this game. The gameplay was fun and the ending had no right to be so emotional. Score: 10/10 Assassin's Creed (PS3): My first AC game and I liked it very much. The protagonist was not that likable and the missions were rather repetitive (you basically did the same three types of missions over and over again) but I could understand why it was so revered back when it was released. The aspect of climbing basically everywhere was a lot of fun albeit not always accurate. And even today, the arrival at a new city is really mesmerizing and I can only imagine how blown away people were back then. Score: 7/10 Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (PS3): A fun little gem with great voice actors. Fun gameplay mechanics and an interesting story albeit not fully fleshed out. But I liked the dynamic between Monkey and Trip. A shame that a sequel is unlikely. I would have loved to see a continuation. Score: 8/10 The Escapists: The Walking Dead (PS4): I like the idea of the Escapists games but this one got rather repetitive and even had a game-breaking bug that I had to figure out somehow because the developers never made an effort to fix it. Funnily enough, it was the patch that broke the game so I had to play without it for that level. Score: 6/10 Soma (PS4): A psychological horror game that poses many philosophical questions about one's mind and identity, and what makes us human. It was kind of a project with a friend who cannot play horror games on her own but liked to watch me play. We had a lot of fun but the enemies were quite unnecessary and rather strenuous and annoying than scary. However, as I wrote, the story was interesting, and the ending kind of caught me off guard even though I kind of expected it. Score: 7/10
November Little Dragons Café (PS4): It is a charming game in the likes of Harvest Moon but it misses its potential. It gets repetitive pretty fast and the controls are a bit clunky. The mechanics of running a café also got stressful at times and this combined with the exploring part was not very well balanced; I felt rushed so many times I played it on and off again for a bit but I was glad when I finished the story. It is a shame that it was not more fleshed out. Score: 6/10 Monster Hunter World (PS4): I played this game on and off again since the beginning of 2019 but really intensively at the beginning of 2020 with some friends. It is the best Monster Hunter in the series as it is more friendly to the new players and not as cryptic as the other games (but still you have to figure out a lot by yourself and or just having a lot of tabs open on your phone). It is so much fun fighting the different monsters, grinding for better weapons and armor. I had the most fun with my friends, all using different weapons and just trying to finish off a freaking Kirin. At some point, I just decided I was done with it with over 180 hours of game time until I will buy the DLC. Score: 9/10 Sleeping Dogs (PS4): I did not expect much but fell in love with this game. It has an interesting story and picks up on the undercover detective trope, so it is not the most original idea but is executed well enough. I liked the protagonist and loved the setting of Hong Kong. I also liked that there was emphasis put on melee fighting rather than gunfighting. The DLCs were not as fun but were a sweet bonus. I would love a sequel to this. Score: 8/10
So, this became longer than expected and I am sorry for any mistakes or not being as eloquent as other posts here but I enjoyed writing this up and reflecting on all the games I have played this year. Thank you, if you took the time reading any of it. Edit: For some reason I totally forgot one game: A Way Out. I have added that to the list.

The chronological play order of the Yakuza series is almost the same as Kiryu's life path, with the only major difference being the placement of Yakuza 0. If you're following the chronological play order, the game will unfold just like how the devs originally decided, like you wouldn't know that Vader was Luke's father until The New Hope. To play the games in chronological order, you’ll need to start with Yakuza 0, where a young, fresh-faced Kazuma Kiryu is beginning to make his mark. The Yakuza game order is actually pretty straightforward, so let’s take a look. Main Series Order. Yakuza 0 ; Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami; Yakuza 2/Yakuza Kiwami 2; Yakuza 3; Yakuza 4; Yakuza 5; Yakuza 6: The Song of Life; Yakuza: Like a Dragon. The original Yakuza and Yakuza 2 for the PS2 have been remade as Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2. From Xfire: 'The Yakuza series of video games contains about half a dozen main titles and approximately one dozen spin-offs. Often hailed as the GTA of the East, the Yakuza series has nailed the spot between serious emotional play tones, wacky side quests and over the top combat. Until as recently as 2020, the Yakuza games were centred around Kiryu Kazuma, the legendary Yakuza, which made Yakuza is on of the few series where it's actually ok to start with a prequel. Usually order of release is always the correct order. But I guess you also have to play the Kiwami versions of 1&2 as they were made after 0 and include changes to account for a lot of the stuff that happens in 0.
